Privacy Policy
Last updated: 26 October 2026
WoxChat is a messenger for private chats, voice and video calls, and status updates. This policy explains what the service handles and why.
What we collect
- Account: your phone number, the name you choose, an optional about line, and an optional profile photo.
- Device: a public key for this browser or phone, a device name, and the time that device was last seen. The private key stays on the device.
- Messages: ciphertext, not the readable text. The server stores the encrypted message, its key boxes for devices in the chat, and the time it was sent.
- Media: files you send. The web app encrypts file bytes before upload.
- Contacts: if you choose to match your address book, phone numbers are checked against registered accounts. The address book itself is not stored.
- Calls: call metadata such as who started it and whether it was video. Live audio and video are carried by LiveKit to connect the call.
- Presence: online state, last seen, typing, and read receipts for people in your chats.
What stays on your device
The private encryption key is stored locally. Logging out does not send that key to the server. A new device can read new messages only after it is linked and has its own key.
Sharing
We do not sell personal information. Push notifications, when configured, go through OneSignal and use a generic label such as “New message” or “Photo”, not the message text. Call media is processed by LiveKit to deliver the call.
Retention
Messages stay until someone deletes them or a disappearing-message timer removes them. Verification codes expire after a few minutes. You can remove a linked device, which signs that device out.
Children
WoxChat is not directed at children under 13.
